Shannon Smith, Wyoming Humanities

Shannon Smith is the Executive Director and CEO of Wyoming Humanities, our state’s affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and one of 55 state and territorial humanities councils in the U.S. Wyoming Humanities was conceived by a group of University of Wyoming faculty and approved by the NEH in 1970 and has been supporting public projects for the fifty years since—we were the first state humanities council and today all 55 councils are modeled on this Wyoming proposal as independent nonprofits governed by a diverse group of directors from all parts of the state. Smith, who was appointed as the council’s sixth chief executive in 2013, is a historian and author who worked for more than a decade in higher education, including seven years teaching at a tribal college on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
